Travelling Safer When Flying

Travelling Safer When Flying

xIt feels strange writing this post when we are in the middle of a travel ban and a second lockdown, but the optimist in me is saying that it won’t last forever and the skies will soon be open once again for some travel. Even at this point, I know travel is controversial but some will want to or need to travel during the pandemic. Here are some tips to make your journey as smooth and safe as possible.

Airports are a lot quieter than they would normally be but I would highly recommend pre booking your security slot at Manchester Airport. It is free and means you have a specific time to go through security, making it quicker and much more efficient than waiting in a queue. If there are no slots available, you can also pay for a similar service with the Fast Track pass. The fast track service allows you to go through to a priority area with less people and puts you at the front of the queue, meaning less time waiting in line.

To ensure your luggage has as little contact with others as possible, I would also recommend travelling with a carry on only. I wrote a post about how to get the most from travelling with carry on luggage only which you might find useful. When I took a flight in July, I used the Osprey Porter 30 pack, which is the perfect size for all airlines carry on policy. It is a backpack but with the storage capacity of a duffel, meaning you can get more in whilst it still being comfortable to wear. The pack opens out like a suitcase so it gives easy access to all your belongings without rummaging through and messing up your organisation. As with most Osprey packs, there are several useful compartments like a padded laptop sleeve and sunglasses pocket. I managed to squish in enough items for a week’s trip so it is really roomy and slots in the overhead locker perfectly.

Once through security, you will find the bars open at Manchester Airport, but for comfort I would recommend booking into the Escape Lounge. Tables are socially distanced, all food and drink is included and delivered directly to you at your table so you do not risk being too close to any other guests. Masks are compulsory when moving around the lounge (to enter, leave and go to the toilet) but you can remove it once seated. It makes the airport experience feel that bit safer in my opinion.

There is no set rule when it comes to what mask to wear, but I found having a selection made me feel more comfortable. I have a stash of disposable ones which I found more comfortable during the actual flight as they are slightly thinner so feel more breathable. I also love the ones that Hello Terri Lowe makes and have a few different ones for when they are in the wash. She uses thin and stretchy elastic which is much more comfortable than the thick flat elastic of others. I have already bought some Christmas ones, I may as well accessorise right?

On the flight you will be asked to remain seated and not to queue whilst waiting for the toilet. For this reason, if you are travelling solo I would recommend grabbing an aisle seat so you can get in and out without disturbing others on the flight. You can remove your mask to eat and drink but by the time you leave the lounge, you won’t need more meaning you can stay in your mask for the duration of your flight.

My final tip would be to stay calm, try and have a sleep on the flight and stick to the rules of social distancing. If everyone does what is asked, it will be as comfortable and safe as possible. And isn’t that what we all want?
