Restaurant Review – Les Deux Pizza Bar, Alderley Edge

Alderley Edge can be a really tough area to crack. Restaurants have come and gone, the venues left behind are all at the a la carte, plush end of the market and it really was crying out for something a little more chilled out. Let me introduce you to Les Deux Pizza Bar.

Make your way through the little pink door and enter the small space that is bold, colourful and welcoming. Take a seat beside the flamingo wall and watch the pizzas coming out of the incredible Gozney oven whilst sipping a margarita from the many on offer. Yes, you read that right, there is a margarita menu and I am here for it.

There is no barrier between you and the pizza oven, which is something I have never seen before. You are right in the action from the dough being stretched and dressed, to it being fired into the oven for a matter of seconds before arriving at your table.

The menu is fairly small with a selection of sharing starters, salads and the pizza menu. You can choose from classic or global pizza toppings with a classic margherita on one side, and a pizza with a pumpkin base on the other. The cocktail menu feels longer in comparison with a nice selection of classics and more latin inspired concoctions.

We shared the Charcuterie Plate with meat that is cured locally and sourced as sustainably as possible. You can tell as it is flavourful and tender yet the star is those sweet pickled onions. I could have eaten a full jar of them! We didn’t think the meats would be enough on their own so ordered a side of the Cheesy Fries. They are cheesy but with parmesan and lots of salt so remain crispy and fluffy, something that usually wanes when adding molten cheese. I mean, I am all for cheesy chips like that but these are something special and we were still munching on them when we were full.

We both chose pizzas from the global side of the menu – Oh Elloooooo for me and the Peking for my date. The dough is fermented for 48 hours giving it a light and airy texture, and the quick cooking means it maintains a crisp base whilst staying nice and thin. Oh Elloooooo has a tomato, mozzarella and parmesan base topped with sticky beef and truffle oil. The beef is delicious and remains soft and the truffle oil adds an earthy richness. My only complaint would be the amount of beef as I would have liked more, but then it was so nice that I guess I’d say that no matter how much of it there was.

The Peking has a hoisin sauce base with shredded duck, cucumber strips, fior di latte, sweet ginger and pickled spring onion. The toppings are on the sweet side but the sour notes of the base really balance it out to make a beautiful pizza.

We were too full for dessert really so decided to share the Rice Pudding. It is lightly scented with rose water and topped with candied pistachio for added nuttiness. The rice is al dente with the pudding light rather than being too creamy. It was a good way to end the meal without making it too heavy.

There is always a good time for pizza and at Les Deux, you are welcome if you are in your jeans or dressed to the nines for a full on night out. If you don’t fancy going out to dine, you can pick up to take out as well. I wonder if it’ll stay hot all the way back to Stockport…
