Human Food Review

Finding food on the go that is nutritious can be really difficult. Most healthier options like sushi and salad (which would be my go to choices) are messy, yet finding something to fill a gap that is more portable tends to be full of sugar. Human Food think they have the answer.

Human Food was founded by Ky Wright, who left his business making frozen yoghurts to travel the world and work on his idea for a plant based bar that contains no refined sugars. In 2018 he launched a kick starter, which went on to be the world’s most funded vegan product of all time.

There are 3 bars in the collection, aptly referred to as red, green and yellow. The bars all contain 100% recommended daily intake of B12, which is a first for vegan products like this and a vitamin that many vegans lack from their diet. All ingredients are organic and each bar contains no more than 285 calories. There are no soy, GMO or refined sugars, and all packaging is fully recyclable.

All three bars are different. Green contains 2 grams of spirulina, red contains 8 grams of goji berries and yellow contains 500mg of turmeric. All 3 are considered to be superfoods with their own health benefits and qualities. You can choose to include all into your diet or just 1, if that is something you feel is lacking from your nutrition.

I love the simple concept of each bar having its own identity as simply as a colour. It makes things a lot easier to understand from a product that is potentially quite complex to understand.

The bars are designed to either be eaten on their own, or broken up over porridge. You could also blitz it into a smoothie if that is your preferred meal choice. Human Food recommend you have 1 bar a day and they contain all the vitamins and minerals you could need from a meal, so breakfast or lunch is their chosen time to enjoy one.

So all that being said, what do they taste like? The bars are really generous in size compared to other meal bars I have tried. They are not particularly appealing to look at, being almost black in colour but that is not something that really bothers me.

In terms of flavour, they are all different and I would recommend you try them all before judging. I tried the green bar first and it was not at all something I would choose. It is a savoury flavour with a touch of bitterness, fully from the spirulina I’m guessing. The red bar was much more to my taste. Sweeter with a little tartness. It also wasn’t as firm as the green bar. The yellow bar has a little kick thanks to the turmeric, but it is more of a warming flavour than a spicy one. It has a touch of sweetness that rounds it out really well. They are incredibly filling and I couldn’t manage a full bar in one go. Lockdown has meant I have grazed rather than sit down to 3 proper meals a day so this may be why. They are definitely something that I think would be good for breakfast times once I am back to eating in a normal pattern.
