Finding snacks when you are trying to eat healthily can be a challenge. Fried, breaded or artificially flavoured always makes things taste that much better but make the calorie count significantly higher. They can also be the elements of a snack that makes them off limits for people with particular dietary concerns making diet specific snacks boring or weird tasting. Not to be deterred, friends Tomas and David set about creating a tasty snack and Mister Free’d was born.
David is coeliac so understood how difficult it can be to find a tasty snack that he could eat. Their range of tortilla chips are plant based and gluten free yet packed with flavour, meaning you won’t feel like you are missing out in any way.
I was kindly sent the Blue Maize and Cheezie flavours to try so popped them into a bowl to enjoy with my famous chilli con carne with baked beans recipe. I don’t like kidney beans so adding baked beans makes my chilli con carne sweeter than normal, although I do balance this out with extra chilli and herbs.
The actual chips are the same size as other brands but feel slightly thicker for extra crunch. The addition of blue corn makes the blue maize chips slightly sweeter but the generous sprinkling of salt makes these well seasoned and perfect to balance out the spice in my chilli. The cheezie chips are also good with chilli but I preferred them on their own, in front of the TV binge watching Netflix. I can confirm that the virtually disappeared. Finding a decent cheese flavoured snack when eating plant based is tough, but these genuinely taste like the real thing and make meat free Mondays so much easier.

I would usually pop a flatbread into the oven to eat with a chilli, but Mr Free’d tortilla chips are a better accompaniment and the fact they are healthier, just makes it even better. I have bought them a few times since I was sent them to try and will definitely pick up the different flavours when I see them at my shop. I particularly have my eye on the kale spinach and beetroot with onion flavours. Give them a try, I promise you won’t regret it.
